Reflecting on the Los Angeles Area Fires

The fires in LA and surrounding areas have been devastating and tragic. Like so many,
I feel sad for everyone affected and appreciative for the emergency responders.

There are 2 articles on my website I hope you will read:

  1. Psychological Benefits of Giving I wrote this recently following the holidays but the premises hold true with regard to the fires. I hope you find it in your heart to give, whether to the Red Cross, Firefighters and/or GoFundMe.
  2. Collective Grief Whether the grief is personal or not, the phenomenon of “Collective Grief reminds us that we are not alone, and together, we can find strength and hope for the future.”

I wrote the following poem as I reflected on the current heartbreaks:

Reflecting on the LA Area Fires
By Barbara Pedalino, PsyD

The heat of the moment
Is scorching and sad
The results have been
Really, really bad.
So much devastation
Affecting our entire nation
But not as intense
As those with no defense.
Homes burned down
Also buildings in town
Some were injured
Some lost their life
Emergency workers
Endless through this strife.
Smoke and despair
Are seen everywhere.
What do we value?
We must have reflection
Our strength is being tested
We search for direction.
We must come together
In such times of need
Call on our hearts
To take the lead.
