Life is a Balancing Act

As a psychologist, I often hear clients complain about challenges in life. Expressing
concerns, fears, etc. is what they are supposed to do in therapy. If we consider a range
of emotions that we all have, it includes joy, pleasure, and happiness as well as
sadness, frustration and disappointment. The positive emotions are easier to handle yet
it is often good to be able to share these feelings and related experiences. The negative
emotions can be more difficult to cope with.

In therapy, people can express whatever they like. There are no judgements or
criticisms; rather, pure compassion, understanding, guidance and support. We often
consider options, different perspectives, and strategies for coping.

I am reminded of excerpts from Oh, the Places You’ll Go! by Dr. Suess.

“Wherever you fly, you’ll be best of the best.
Wherever you go, you will top all the rest.
…Except when you don’t.
Because, sometimes, you won’t.”

“I’m sorry to say so
but, sadly, it’s true
that Bang-ups
and Hang-ups
can happen to you.”

I discovered the following article while researching ways to build confidence and
esteem. I found it very meaningful and decided to share it with you:

Life is an ever-changing landscape that keeps us on our toes. From the moment we are
born, and take our first breath, we are expected to flourish. Our parents often have
hopes and dreams for us, even before we exit the womb. This can be a cumbersome
burden to carry through life, and oftentimes, we fall short. In these times, our
determination and grit play a crucial role in helping us move past our shortcomings and
failures. Over the years, I have grown to take great solace in quotes as they help me get
perspective and give me sustenance to move forward.

If you think life is tough, I’m with you! Often, when you feel you have things all figured
out, life throws you a curveball. The way I see it, you have two options. You either let
the curveball dominate your life, or you pivot and take control. I understand that some
people may have barriers that prevent them from recovering from certain situations, and
hopefully, they have a support system in place or know where to turn to find help.

Everyone’s journey through life is different, and we must all be mindful of this and avoid
comparing ourselves with others. In fact, we owe it to ourselves to focus our energy
inward to better ourselves and our circumstances and live the life we deserve. By no
means is life a walk in the park, because there will always be challenges in our way. But
a determined soul is unstoppable.
