How to Ask for Forgiveness
When should you apologize to someone?
Do you ever wonder when it is appropriate to apologize to someone? You may feel
angry or resentful and not want to do it. You may feel embarrassed. It is important to
recognize if you have intentionally or unintentionally hurt someone’s feelings. It is
important to be accountable if you have damaged someone’s property. Maybe you have
inadvertently created a problem for someone. Perhaps you have broken a promise or
agreement. These are times to take responsibility for your behavior, to demonstrate
honesty and integrity.
When is an apology unnecessary?
It is okay to ask a simple question without feeling the need to apologize. Some
apologies are given so instinctively that they are perceived as insincere. If there is a
minor inconvenience like taking up too much space on a sofa or running just a few
minutes late, you really do not have to apologize; however, if you feel the necessity, you
can acknowledge the occurrence without needing to actually say “sorry”.
What are low-quality apologies?
“Low-quality apologies harm rather than help.” (Psychology Today, 2022). When
psychologists characterize apologies as low-quality, they are referring to ones given in
haste with shallow, superficial words. Justifying one’s behavior by having a reason for it,
blaming the victim for creating the adverse situation, making an excuse that it was just a
hard day, and minimizing the consequences as insignificant are all examples of low-
quality apologies.
What are the qualities of a true apology?
Good-quality apologies don’t just sound sincere; they truly are. We are all familiar when
kids say “sorry” in that sing-song voice that we automatically know is not genuine. High-
quality apologies serve to repair and resolve conflicts. They demonstrate acceptance of
responsibility, caring, and a promise to do better in the future. Good-quality apologies
also require humility in the event that the apology is not accepted.
►Thoughtful apologies can magically lead to forgiveness.
The Magic of “I’m Sorry”
Author UnknownWords like “please” and “thank you” shine,
But “sorry” has a light divine.
It mends the breaks in hearts and plays,
It turns the storm to sunny days.
When blocks fall down or tempers fly,
And teardrops gather in the eye,
A tiny word, not very long,
Can change the hurt and make us strong. So use it soft, but use it true—
“I’m sorry” means, “I care for you.”
No shame, no blame, just brave and kind—
A healing spell for heart and mind.
