Do you feel too anxious to try a new adventure?
A client has reported:
“I see other people trying new things and having cool experiences, and I wish I could be
like them. I feel like it’s too late for me to change things in my life. It feels too risky.”
(Yoon, Y. 2024)
This could describe many people who feel anxious and fearful of making a change, to
take a step, to move in a different direction. They might feel bored or encumbered by
old tapes that tell them they are incapable of improving their life; that they are not good
enough. Some people have felt betrayed so many times they feel consumed with
trepidation that “all” people will hurt them and it is too scary to try to find kind people.
What are the psychological benefits of adventure?
Adventure, in its many forms—whether through travel, outdoor activities, or new
experiences—offers profound psychological benefits. At its core, adventure pushes
individuals out of their comfort zones, which leads to personal growth and a better
understanding of oneself. Engaging in adventurous activities cultivates resilience,
boosts self-esteem, enhances creativity, and strengthens mental well-being.
When individuals are exposed to unfamiliar environments or situations, they are forced
to confront and adapt to challenges, be it physical, emotional, or psychological. This
process builds resilience, as the ability to face and overcome difficulties strengthens a
person’s capacity to handle future obstacles. By repeatedly facing discomfort or
unpredictability, individuals become more adept at managing stress and anxiety in their
everyday lives.
How does adventure improve confidence?
Engaging in adventurous activities stimulates creativity and problem-solving abilities.
Adventure often places individuals in unfamiliar or novel situations that require quick
thinking, adaptability, and improvisation. These experiences challenge the brain to
approach problems from new perspectives, encouraging innovative thinking.
How does adventure improve mental health?
The mental health benefits of adventure are substantial, particularly in terms of reducing
symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress. Many activities that are done in nature
have a calming and restorative effect on the mind. The combination of physical activity,
which releases endorphins, and being in natural surroundings helps regulate mood and
decrease stress levels. In this way, confidence can also flourish.
How does adventure foster relationships?
Adventure fosters stronger social connections. Something as simple as a family meal,
seeing familiar faces at the gym, or meeting a hiker on a mountain path, fosters shared
experiences that can strengthen relationships and create lasting bonds. This, in turn,
leads to greater feelings of social support, which is crucial for mental health.
What can you pack for your adventure?
If you go on an adventure, what might you pack in your backpack? Water, a map,
snacks, money, your cell phone, a flashlight, insect repellant, etc.? So, if you are a
fearful person with high anxiety, what if you packed your fear and anxiety, too? And
maybe add a dash of excitement and anticipation. It may sound strange but now you
have everything positive you need to balance out your adverse feelings. Rather than
waiting until you are devoid of negative emotions that keep you from moving forward,
consider taking them along on your adventure!
In therapy, I often ask my clients:
What are you willing to do to help yourself, even if you have fear and anxiety?
