Celebrate Family Life Through Parent Consultations

Are children overprogrammed?

Parents will often consult with me as a psychologist. They will ask how to best help their
child but that their child is too busy to attend therapy. Their child is involved in excellent
activities—scouts, religion, music lessons, soccer, dance, gymnastics, horseback riding,
arts and crafts, robotics. Do you see the problem here? They participate in all these
lessons every week! Do you think this child just may be overprogrammed?

How frequently should parents consult?

I ask parents how often their child attends scout meetings and activities designed to
earn patches. I ask parents how often their child takes music lessons and subsequent
daily practicing. I ask parents how many times per week their child is required to attend
soccer practices and games.

All activities require dedicated time to develop muscle memory. Therapy necessitates
the same and is a process by which clients learn important life lessons. Regular
discussions help parents gain a better understanding of their child’s needs, behaviors,
and emotional responses. When parents receive accurate information and practical
guidance, they become more confident in handling challenges at home.

Initially, the continuity of weekly sessions is paramount for a child to internalize growth
and change. After a while, parents can consult as needed to tweak the strategies they
have implemented.

When a child has a problem, does it infer that the parents are doing a poor job?

Parents who might be doing poor jobs, generally do not reach out for help. It is a wise
parent that realizes some support could be prudent. When parents describe their
challenges and failed interventions, they may worry that they are being judged.
Psychologists and mental health professionals are trained to be accepting. Parent
consultations create a collaborative environment whereby concerns can be addressed
early, strengths can be recognized, and effective strategies can be developed to support
the child’s growth.

As a child psychologist, I recognize that parenting is an extremely vital and, at times,
frustrating job. I am very impressed when parents seek out consultations. Parents often
find that alternate perspectives and strategies are a welcomed breath of fresh air.
Consultations offer a safe space for parents to express concerns, seek advice, and
receive encouragement.

Are parent consultations beneficial?

Absolutely! There can be many reasons why direct sessions with a child are not
feasible. Maybe it relates to the child’s activities. Maybe the child is resistant to the idea
of therapy. Maybe the parents’ work schedules preclude it. Maybe parents look forward
to ideas that help them cope with difficult situations.

I like to share with parents the same skills I utilize in child therapy and offer informative
resources. When parents feel heard and supported, they discover that their anxiety,
stress, and feelings of isolation are reduced, which leads to improved psychological
well-being for the entire family. “Sometimes parents assume consultations are only for
troubleshooting challenges. In reality, they’re just as valuable for celebrating success.
Parent consultations are a chance to reflect on what’s working, highlight your child’s
growth, and talk about what’s going well.” (Thrive Therapy, 2026)
